Kate started off as a musician. More than 25 years in the industry has seen her in various roles including label director, artist manager and studio founder. Switching gears, interested in why people do what they do and what makes people successful she found life coaching.
Now a fully trained personal coach and NLP practitionner she works with a broad range of professionals working in the entertainment industry.
Kate: Life coaching is a form of talking therapy. It gives people the chance to step back from their everyday lives to look at the big picture. This includes looking at what it is that they want to be doing, what is not working for them now and helping to set goals in both their personal and professional lives.
Life coaching provides a framework that enables you to get from where you currently are to where you want to be more quickly. It draws on strengths and experiences but unlike counselling it is completely future focused and builds on the power of new habits.
Kate: If you have things hanging over you that you haven’t done they are at the back of your mind wearing away at you. Making a bit of time once a week where you do those types of tasks gives you the time to sit down and be creative.
Coaching is sometimes called gap management because sometimes people think that the gap between where they are and where they want to be is just too great that they do not know where to start. But if you actually sit down, look at it and break it down it is manageable. This is what coaching does, it takes your big/long term goals and breaks them down into smaller manageable ones.
Kate: As a coach I can actually work with anyone as you are the expert on your life. As a coach I will ask you all the right questions that you often don’t ask yourself.
I have worked with high profile and successful people. They still benefit from time out where they stop and look at the bigger picture. I have also worked with people right at the beginning of their careers. Coaching is for everybody with the ability to make decisions and focus on the future.
Kate: When people tell us what to do we produce a small amount of stress hormones, because actually it’s someone else’s ideas about what we should do. You may come up with those ideas yourself ultimately but the fact that you have come up with them yourself means you produce happy hormones. You feel good and empowered.
The language that we use is very influential in our lives. If we say we are bad at this or ‘I can't do that’ then it sends a very clear message to our unconscious minds that we are not very good at things.
Imagine you are on a plane and the pilot says he is going to try and land the plane. It immediately sends out a message that he isn’t going to be able to do it properly or even at all.
Just noticing negative language is a first step to being aware and you’ll find you will actually start to change it. As a coach I will listen to people and help raise awareness.
Kate: Confidence, time management and work life balance seem to be issues for performers. Addressing them is often about state of mind and being organised.
A session provides a safe space to think about what it is you really want to do, what you want to have, what you want to be and how you can manage that process of getting it. Knowing that often gives people the freedom to let their guard down.
There is always an introductory session - which is free. It is for the client to get an idea of the process and to build a rapport so that both parties feel comfortable working together.
Using the magic wand exercise I ask ‘if I could wave a magic wand across this area of your life, what would be happening?’
Sometimes in looking at what people think they want it turns out to be not actually quite what they want. I have the background and know the industry so I can ask people relevant questions, but coaching is non-directive so I never tell people what to do.
If time and money weren’t issues and you had all the resources you need, what would you be doing?
Kate: Here we start with what the dream is then you would go away and decide what changes you want to make and what you want to do first. Then we basically have a framework enabling you to move forward. The big main goal is your big picture but then you have lots of small goals along the way.
At the end of each session you will leave with something you want to achieve and a specific plan with how you will achieve it. It is all written down because the process of writing something down is so powerful.
Clarity and being specific also really motivates people as does the fact that you are going to see each other again. It is therefore really beneficial to have at least 3 sessions. It’s also a useful opportunity not just to acknowledge what you have to get done but what you have achieved and how far you have come.
Knowing that you are going back, gives actions a deadline and makes you get the work done because you have made a commitment to somebody else.
